[edit] Product Development at a Glance

This page is dedicated to the process of developing Microjustice Products. It starts with a list of issues that are important to consider in the process of product development. Then the process of product development is considered. Basically, we are now developing Pilot Products in four categories (Individual Registration Issues, Property Rights Protection in Rural Settings, Family Issues, and Consumer Issues). So, at present, we see product development as follows (see Schedule and Work Packages Product Development 0.7 for the more detailed description of the steps and the work packages that are connected to this):

1. A first, an experimental Version 0.5 is or will be developed in the Microjustice Bolivia Program. This product-description will be made available on a page in this wiki, so that comments and discussion are possible. As of now (March 3, 2007), this version 0.5 already exists for many products.
2. The Bolivia product development team is now working on amended versions, so that the Microjustice Facilitators can work with these products as of April 1. These products will become available on the Microjustice Bolivia website around that date.
3. Then requirements for the next Beta Version 0.7 will be set, see Product Requirements.
4. Next, the Beta Version of this product will be developed on the basis of deeper local know how and generalized know how:
   1. Experiences of Microjustice Facilitators and their clients
   2. A deeper process of investigating client needs and client capabilities (Base of the Pyramid Protocol).
   3. Know How about Dispute Resolution System Design
   4. Experiences regarding similar procedures from other areas.
5. The general know how will be made available through a Master Product description. This is a descrption of how a product could look like in general, independent of local circumstances.
6. Both the Master Product and the local product will develop jointly.

Here, we try to give answers to the essential questions (see the headings). The discussion about the answers to the questions takes place on the discussion page (see the tab above). As soon as any preliminary answer to these questions is available, it can be placed in the article (this page) itself. In this way, we can gradually build a picture about how the product development process should look like.

A product may consist of different modules, parts of a product that can be used in many different products. How to deal with this? See also Microjustice-BOP Lab Master Thesis Project.

Until now, we have assumed that products will be defined by texts on a website, like the products that are now available on Microjustice Bolivia. Is this the way? What could be alternatives?

Products will be developed locally, for a region or a country. But true economies of scale become possible if products can be used across regions and countries, if necessary in a slightly modified way. How can this generalization process take place?

Product development is to be a joined effort. So how to join forces and integrate expertise from the following groups?

The Bolivia product development team has developed first versions of many products already. They will usually take the lead, so that product development takes place bottom up, as close as possible to the clients, see also MJ Product Development Guidelines.

[edit] Expertise regarding access to justice and dispute resolution system design?

At the same time experts on access to justice and dispute resolution system design can help. They may know how to develop more efficient products and products that are more likely to work between people, because experiences in other countries show this or because well-researched psychological processes make this more likely.

This has to be integrated as well. Which kind of expertise do we need?

Another necessary link is to the guys that develop the website interface, both in Bolivia (see the preliminary version on Microjustice Bolivia) and in the MicrojusticeNormsandProcesses.com project.

[edit] Integration with Base of the Pyramid Process?

Moreover, the product development will be guided by the Base of the Pyramid Protocol. This protocol ensures a truly bottom up process, guided by the client needs and their capabilities. How to integrate the methods this protocol in our process of product development? And how to bring expertise from BOP specialists to the floor in Bolivia? One idea is to develop a version of the BOP protocol that is specifically dedicated to Microjustice products.

Maybe it is to early to talk about these steps already. Probably we will have some phases like the following:

• Investigation phase
  • Investigation of needs
  • Investigation of present ways of dealing with needs
  • Investigation of capabilities that could be used in order to fulfill needs in a better way
• Setting of requirements
  • Goals the client wants to achieve
  • Requirement setting: what will be test whether the product works in a satisfactory way? See Product Requirements
• Product design phase
• Phase etc.

• What are the interests of the clients in following the process?
• Which changes in their lives do they ultimately want to achieve?

• What is the official procedure?
  • What is the desired outcome of the procedure? A document, a settlement of a dispute, a decision.
  • What are the basic steps the client has to take. No details. Three or four most important points. Overview.
  • What are the detailed actions a client has to take? Now describe in more detail from the perspective of the client.
  • What are the most common complications a client can face? Complications are things that make the procedure more complicated than the standard ones. They make additional steps necessary.
  • What are the best practices for dealing with these complications?
  • What are the total costs of the procedure for the client?
    • Out of pocket expenses.
    • Time the client has to spend in hours. Waiting time, travel time, etc.
    • Duration of the procedure in days, weeks, or years.
  • What is the average quality of the procedure as experienced by the average client?
  • What is the average quality of the outcome as experienced by the average client?
  • What are the most important obstacles a client faces?
  • What suggestions can be done for improvement of the procedure?
• Are there informal ways to deal with the need?
