[edit] Introduction

[edit] Aim of this Page

Aim is to organize the work necessary to obtain a business plan. The pilot program will now be moving into it's next phase. The project goal is to develop a 5 year economic plan for Microjustice Programs, and in particular for the Fundación Microjusticia Bolivia. It is connected to the project that develops the Business Case for Microjustice Facilitators.

[edit] Way of Cooperation

On this page, we try to define the scope of the Business Plan project, see where we can find the resources for it, and establish the timeframe for getting it done. Writing about this before starting the job may seem time consuming. But it helps to:

  • Define what is really needed.
  • Organize our own thoughts.
  • See whether all of us want the same thing.
  • Let people in different places of the world contribute their ideas in an organized manner.
  • Find funding. If we write in this way, we almost have a project proposal ready for submitting to donors.
  • Find people who can do the job. They will want to know what they can expect and what is expected from them.
  • Guide people who execute the job (volunteers, or others) so that they do what is needed.

This way of setting up a project is making use of the best practices of project management. See for instance many handbooks on project management and the Wikipedia entry on projectmanagement.

[edit] Scope

[edit] Goal

A 5 year business plan for a Microjustice Program, in particular for Fundacion Microjusticia Bolivia, adjusted to the local setting in the La Paz region of Bolivia. Is this the right description? Please add your thoughts or change what is already there.

[edit] Objectives

The business plan should give an answer to at least the following questions:

  • What prices are affordable to the customers, while profitable for the facilitators and sustainable for the foundation?
  • How long and how much subsidy would be needed?
  • Worse case scenario, best case scenario?
  • Please add here more questions you think the business plan should answer. The more specific, the better. Asking the right questions is about half the effort of writing the plan itself!

[edit] Deliverables and Specifications

The business plan should meet the following specifications:

  • Adjusted to the local setting in the La Paz region of Bolivia.
  • Spanish or English?
  • Chapters, headings?

The plan should contain the following information:

  • background of the organization (microjustice)
  • products/services (description, competitive comparison, delivery etc)
  • industry, competition and market (eg. market size, customer profile etc)
  • marketing plan (incl.pricing and distribution channel)
  • operating plan (incl. personnel plan)
  • management & organization
  • goals and strategy
  • financial plan
  • Any other things you think that are important?

[edit] Resources

[edit] Know how

Which type of know how is needed to meet the goal and the objectives?

  • Formats, or know how about how to write a business plan/strategic plan.
  • Deep knowledge about the Microjustice way of thinking?
  • What other knowledge?

[edit] Capabilities

What other capabilities and skills are necessary to meet the goal and the objectives?*Spanish language skills?

  • Cooperation skills?

[edit] People

There are many possible ways to get people to do this. Which ones have you considered and wish to pursue? What is realistic and what are the costs, the funding possibilities and the consequences for the organization?

  • Find foreign experts, in particular from BOP community. Patrick, can you expand on this option?
  • Find foreign students, for instance from Tilburg. Patrick, Job, is this a possible master thesis project, or is it too 'practical' for that?
  • Find experts in Bolivia?
  • Do it internally, by acquiring or hiring relevant know how and capabilitie?
  • Find a volunteer, who is willing to pick up this workpackage.
  • Find a team of volunteers, who help with writing the plan in a question and answer method via the wiki.

[edit] Money

Which money sources do you have available, or have you thought of? Of course this depends on the way the project will be done.

  • Is it possible to devote some part of the present budgets to this?
  • The Tilburg Bottom of the Pyramid lab presently has no funds for this. The Tilburg Bottom of the Pyramid lab (Patrick Vermeulen) and the Dispute System Researchers (Maurits Barendrecht) have however approached donors. They have asked them to invest in the application of the Base of the Pyramid Protocol to the Microjustice Bolivia operation. Writing a business plan could be part of this. But it is yet uncertain whether money can be raised in this way quickly.
  • Other sources? Local in Bolivia? Please add your thoughts:

[edit] Other resources

What else is needed?

  • Place to work?
  • Means for traveling?
  • Cooperation of MJ Facilitators?
  • Time and knowledge of MJ Bolivia team? How much time can they devote to help?

[edit] Timing

What is urgent? When do you need which questions to be answered?
